Prosecutor’s Office denounces “embezzlement” of USD 1,163 million in PDVSA

The Venezuelan prosecutor’s office ordered Friday the arrest of dozens of people allegedly involved in an embezzlement of 1,163 million dollars for irregular purchases in the state oil company PDVSA. The embezzlement by sobreprecio is of 1.163 million dollars “, indicated the general prosecutor, Tarek William Saab, before the press. The embezzlement was also caused by the purchase of inadequate equipment, damaged or not even delivered, he added. The prosecutor said that “the satellite office PDVSA services” -created in 2009 for international acquisitions- made “23,216 purchases in four years for 11.969 million dollars”. According to the official, those responsible for the embezzlement have accomplices in Venezuela, so the Prosecutor’s Office requested his arrest. “We are talking about dozens of citizens (…). For example, we detected purchases with overpriced electric plants, seven orders, with an overpricing of 190%, meaning a damage of 580 million dollars, “said Saab. He added that 32 companies were involved in the illegal activities, four of them allegedly linked to Roberto Rincón and Abraham José Shiera, prosecuted in the United States for allegedly laundering and hiding money from corruption in PDVSA. According to Saab, 80 officials of the oil company, including “22 senior managers and two former presidents,” have been arrested since last August for allegedly being part of several “corruption plots” for at least 40,000 million dollars. Source of 96% of the revenues of Venezuela, PDVSA and the Nation were declared in partial default at the end of 2017 for delayed payments of debt bonds.

Bloomberg warns about “epidemic of dishonesty”

Americans face an “epidemic of dishonesty” in Washington that is more dangerous than terrorism or communism, said former mayor of the city of New York Michael Bloomberg. The billionaire warned in a graduation speech on Saturday at Rice University in Texas that “an endless barrage of lies” and a tendency toward “alternative realities” in national politics threaten the democracy of the United States. The 76-year-old, who flirted with an independent presidential race in 2016, did not call any politician by name, although he mocked Donald Trump as “a con man” and “dangerous demagogue” before his election. of the speech, Bloomberg declined to comment specifically on the troubled Republican president’s story with the truth. Inspectors of facts have determined that Trump has made hundreds of false and misleading statements since entering the Oval Office. “This is bigger than anyone, it’s bigger than anywhere else,” Bloomberg said in an interview with Rice’s graduates, the former mayor of New York evoking the legend of the nation’s first president. George Washington, who as a child said he could not tell a lie when asked if he had cut a cherry tree. “How did we get from a president who could not lie to politicians who can not tell the truth?” Bloomberg asked the Rice graduates and their families gathered in Houston, Texas. He blamed “extreme partisanship” for an unprecedented tolerance for dishonesty in US politics, people are more committed to their political tribes than to the truth, he said, suggesting that the nation is more divided than at any other time. since the Civil War. “Now there is more tolerance for dishonesty in politics than I have seen in my life,” Bloomberg said. “The only thing more dangerous than dishonest politicians who do not respect the law, is a chorus of facilitators who defend each of their lies,” he said. For example, He noted that Democrats spent much of the 1990s defending President Bill Clinton against lying charges and personal immorality while Republicans attacked the White House’s lack of ethics and honesty. Just the opposite is happening today, he said. In an attack on Trump, he noted that the vast majority of scientists agree that climate change is real. Trump and his Republican allies have repeatedly called climate change a deception promoted by the adversaries of the United States. “If 99 percent of the scientists whose research has been peer-reviewed reach the same general conclusion about a theory, then we should accept it as the best information available, even if it’s not a 100 percent certainty,” Bloomberg said. He added: ” That, graduates, is not a Chinese hoax. ” He warned that such deep levels of dishonesty could allow what he called “criminality.” When asked what he was specifically talking about, Bloomberg noted “many investigations,” but declined to be more specific, with several Trump associates facing criminal charges as part of a federal investigation into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election. Three people have already pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI Federal investigators want to interview Trump, although the president’s legal team has resisted so far. “When elected officials speak as if they are above the truth, they will act as if they were above the law ”,Bloomberg told Rice graduates. “And when we tolerate dishonesty, we get criminality, sometimes it’s in the form of corruption, sometimes it’s abuse of power, and sometimes it’s both.” “The greatest threat to American democracy is not communism, jihadism or any other foreign force or foreign power,” he continued, “It is our own will to tolerate dishonesty in the service of the party and in the pursuit of power.”

North Korea says it will dismantle its nuclear test site

North Korea said on Saturday it will dismantle its nuclear test site from May 23 to 25, an impressive event prior to the summit of leader Kim Jong Un with US President Donald Trump.

Kim revealed plans to dismantle the nuclear testing ground in the north-west of the country by the end of May during the summit he had with South Korean President Moon Jae-in last month. Analysts say that the closure of the site is largely symbolic and does not represent a material step towards denuclearization.

In a statement released by state media, the North Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that all the tunnels of the land, in the northeast of the country, will be destroyed by explosions, and the observation and investigation facilities will be dismantled, as well as the guard units.

Pyongyang said it plans to invite journalists from the United States, South Korea, China, Russia and Britain to inspect the process, the statement added.

After the summit between Moon and Kim, the South Korean president’s office said that Kim was willing to reveal the process to international experts, but the statement issued by North Korea on Saturday does not mention allowing experts on the spot.

Pyongyang’s announcement came days after Washington announced that the unprecedented summit between Kim and Trump will be held on June 12 in Singapore.

Seoul has said that Kim has a genuine interest in negotiating nuclear disarmament in exchange for economic benefits. However, doubts remain about whether Kim would be willing to give up his weapons, which he sees as his only guarantee of survival.

Kim declared in December that his nuclear forces were complete, about three months after he conducted the most powerful nuclear test until then and tested the course of three intercontinental ballistic missiles, ICBM for its acronym in English, designed to reach the US mainland. .

At a meeting of the ruling party last month, North Korea had already announced that it had suspended all testing of nuclear devices and ICBM and the plan to close the nuclear test site.

Even so, the closure of the land could be a beneficial precedent for Washington and Seoul now that both countries are close to conducting negotiations on nuclear weapons with Pyongyang, according to analysts.

The post North Korea says it will dismantle its nuclear test site appeared first on WIPR .

Voice of America: Joy, Outrage as US Embassy Set to Open in Jerusalem

With the opening Monday of the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem, the region is bracing for both celebrations and unrest. The United States plans to host about 800 guests at an opening ceremony of its embassy. U.S. President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, will be on hand, while Trump addresses the ceremony via video, reaffirming his December 2017 decision to move the American embassy from Tel Aviv. “I have determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel,” Trump said at the White House late last year. “While previous presidents have made this a major campaign promise, they failed to deliver. Today, I am delivering.” WATCH: Joy and Outrage as US Embassy Set to Open in Jerusalem   National Security Advisor John Bolton points out that other presidents also said they would move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, but Trump is the only one to do it. “That’s not simply something that has an effect on the conditions in Israel, but it says to world leader all around the world, when he says he’s going to do something, he does,” Bolton told VOA on Friday. Most of the 850 U.S. Embassy workers will remain in Tel Aviv until a new embassy building is constructed in Jerusalem. Fifty of them will make up the initial staff at the new embassy, including U.S. Ambassador David Friedman. Experts say the move is largely symbolic. But with Palestinians wanting to name East Jerusalem as a capital of their future state, this symbolism matters. ‘Contentious’ issue Khaled Elgindy of the Brookings Institution notes both Republican and Democratic administrations have resisted moving the U.S. Embassy for the past 70 years. “The United States, like most countries in the world, have maintained an embassy in Tel Aviv, rather than in Jerusalem, precisely because of the highly contentious nature of the issue of Jerusalem for Palestinians, for Israelis, for the Arab world, for the Muslim world, for Christians around the world, and of course for Jews as well,” he said. Elgindy said the move was centered on U.S. domestic politics, namely a campaign pledge Trump made to his core supporters.  “There is no national security interest that is gained by moving the embassy — to the contrary,” he said. “I think it destabilizes the region. It adds a level of instability and it also makes it much harder to negotiate peace between Israelis and Palestinians.” Palestinians have protested Trump’s decision and are calling for more demonstrations next week. They want East Jerusalem, which Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East war, as the capital of their future Palestinian state and feel that Trump gave away the “crown jewel” of peace negotiations. Senior Palestinian official Nabil Shaath said Trump shattered any hope for the peace process.  “What [Trump] has done is blow out the possibility of a peace process that was really never completed,” Shaath said. Palestinian officials are no longer accepting the U.S. as a mediator, while Israeli leaders see the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem as a long-held dream come true. ‘Great moment’ for Israel Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the move would have long-term, positive ramifications. “This is a great moment for the citizens of Israel and this is a historic moment for the state of Israel,” Netanyahu said during an Israeli Cabinet meeting in February. Asked what concessions the United States had won from Israel in exchange for the move, a senior administration official said that was not what the decision was about. It was about doing what is best for America’s interests, the official said. “There was no give-and-take with Israel with regard to this decision,” the official said during a background briefing with reporters. The official said the Jerusalem embassy would be opening just five months after the president announced the decision, adding, as the president likes to say, “ahead of schedule and under budget.”
